Aged Rum Cocktails

69 drinks · Updated October 2026

Aged rum is rum that has spent time in wooden vessels, usually oak barrels, after distillation. The underlying spirit may come from molasses or sugarcane juice, and maturation interacts with differences in fermentation and still type. Wood can contribute vanilla, spice and tannin, while climate and barrel history affect how maturation proceeds. Color alone does not reliably indicate age because coloring and filtration can change appearance. In cocktails, aged rum supplies cane-derived flavor alongside wood notes. The Mai Tai combines it with lime, orange liqueur and orgeat, while Hot Buttered Rum uses butter, sugar, spices and hot water.
