Amaro Cocktails

96 drinks · Updated October 2026

Amaro is the Italian word for bitter and the name of a broad family of bittersweet herbal liqueurs. Producers use different combinations of roots, herbs, bark, spices and citrus peel, so the category varies widely in sweetness, bitterness and strength. In cocktails, amaro supplies sweetness and botanical flavor or replaces part of another modifier. The Black Manhattan uses amaro in place of the Manhattan's sweet vermouth. The Hanky-Panky uses a small measure of fernet, while the Toronto combines fernet with whiskey and sugar.
